The hits just keep coming for the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles announced this afternoon that rookie WR Jalen Reagor is out with a UCL tear in his thumb. It is unclear how long he will be sidelined, but Reagor will initially be placed on injured reserve.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees missed five games with this same injury last season. With Reagor placed on injured reserve, he will be required to miss at least three weeks.
No matter the duration, Reagor’s absence is a huge blow to an offense already sputtering. Quarterback Carson Wentz has been inconsistent and turnover-prone to start the season. Losing the Eagles’ first-round selection is only going to make life more difficult for his quarterback.
Philadelphia’s offense was already without top WR Alshon Jeffery (foot), and the Eagles’ WR depth is suddenly more devoid of talent.
The top candidates to fill in during Reagor’s absence will be J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and John Hightower. Arcega-Whiteside is a second-year player who has yet to live up to his second-round draft status, while Hightower is a rookie selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft.
Neither player has had much of a role in the offense through two games this season, however, as Arcega-Whiteside and Hightower have combined for one catch for a two-yard loss.
This Eagles offense needs playmakers. They have two really good tight ends in Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedart, but DeSean Jackson is currently the only proven playmaker able to stretch the field. Now, the Eagles will lean on their younger receivers to step up and prove they deserve to be part of the game plan, moving forward. The opportunity has presented itself, but the question remains whether one of them will seize the day.
Whether someone steps up or not, this is another disappointing turn of events for a winless Eagles team that has opened the season with two extremely disappointing losses to start the season. You can read about those here and here.
The Eagles host the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Look for a preview of that Week 3 match-up on Friday.
