It’s official – the wide receiver group of the New York Jets will be down another player against the 49ers. Jamison Crowder will be out for the game Sunday.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini was the first to break the news.
The injury will leave the New York Jets with three healthy wide receivers from the active roster available for the game Sunday: Breshad Perriman, Chris Hogan, and Braxton Berrios. They will have to bring someone up from the practice squad, because only having three wide receivers for a game would be reckless.
This not only leave the wide receivers thin, but it leaves the Jets with very little options on offense. Frankly, their best option is likely going with heavy packages and focusing on the ground game with Frank Gore and Kalen Ballage (possibly La’Michal Perine). The Jets should play old-school, smash-mouth football, and we should see a lot of Trevon Wesco in this game.
The injury bug has hit the Jets hard, especially at wide receiver. During camp, Sam Darnold had no chance to develop chemistry with his receivers, as one seemingly went down almost daily. Not drafting a second wide receiver is now coming back to haunt the Jets.
If the Jets want to pull off this upset, the victory is going to have to be the kind of game Adam Gase seems to want, a low-scoring one. Unfortunately for the Jets and the fans, it may be just like a preseason game. The 49ers may be able to rest starters early.
The Jets will have to muck it up and control the clock. Keeping the ball out of the hands of the 49ers offense is the only way to win.
