How Kevin Stefanski will help Baker Mayfield

Third year quarterback Baker Mayfield looks to bounce back after throwing 21 interceptions this past season. Mayfield had a tremendous rookie campaign and many declared the Browns Super Bowl contenders when they made the blockbuster Odell Beckham trade before the 2019 season, but they failed to live up to their high expectations.

The Browns decided to move on from ex-HC Freddie Kitchens who is now the tight ends coach for the New York Giants. The Browns brought in former Vikings OC, Kevin Stefanski. Stefanski will be their 12th different coach since 1999.

Stefanski appears to be the perfect HC for a gunslinging quarterback like Mayfield. Stefanski has been in the QB room with gunslingers before. One in particular, Hall of Fame quarterback, Brett Favre. Stefanski was the assistant QB coach during Favre’s last two seasons in Minnesota.

The hope is Stefanski can correct Mayfield’s struggles from 2019. Stefanski took Kirk Cousins’ offense to the next level in Minnesota, taking them all the way to the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Stefanski’s offensive scheme is perfect for Mayfield. Last season was Stefanski’s first season calling plays in Minnesota and he proved to be effective. According to PFF, Kirk Cousins’ passer rating went from 14th to 4th. There’s no denying that Stefanski was a game changer calling plays. Also, expect the Browns to utilize many play action plays to allow Mayfield more time to find his weapons downfield.

With the addition of two new tackles in Jack Conklin and 10th overall pick, Jedrick Willis Jr. and a shiny new tight end in Austin Hooper joining the already talented offensive unit of Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Jarvis Landry, David Njoku, and Odell Beckham Jr, Stefanksi may now have a more talented group than he did in Minnesota.

With Stefanksi taking control of the offense, the hope would be that Stefanksi can open up the field more for Mayfield to find his playmakers down the field by also mixing in the run game with two effective backs in Chubb and Hunt.

Browns fans were rallying for Freddie Kitchens to be fired and they get their wish and get arguably the best HC on the market. Cleveland fans are hopeful once again and hope Stefanski at the helm can lead them to a successful 2020 campaign and take them to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
