NEw England Patriots: 2020 Season Preview

Well this is new. For the first time in 20 years, outside of injury or suspension, a quarterback not named Tom Brady will be the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots.

There is a lot of uncertainty with this team, is Cam Newton healthy? and if he is, can he return to his MVP form? Will N’Keal Harry have a breakout season? Can Josh McDaniels make his offense work with Cam? Will Sony Michel have a bounce-back season? Can this defense still be elite with so many key pieces missing? Frankly, right now there are more questions than answers. So let’s break down what has been going on with this team since their unsurprisingly early exit from last season’s playoffs.

Key Arrivals:

Cam Newton.

Key Returns:

David Andrews, Devin McCourty, Mathew Slater.

Key Departures:

Tom Brady, Kyle Van Noy, Danny Shelton, Jamie Collins, Rob Gronkowski.

Key Opt-Outs:

Dont’a Hightower, Patrick Chung.

Wow. Looking at that list is frankly depressing, the Patriots really failed to put any real pieces around Brady last season and somehow Cam is going to have even less help. David Andrews getting a clean bill of health is huge, I personally believe this Offensive Line will be very good even with the departure of long time OL Coach Dante Scarnecchia. On the positive side as well, this secondary is still great. Stephon Gilmore, Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty, and J.C. Jackson all help round out what should be one of the best secondaries in the NFL, losing Patrick Chung does hurt, but he is certainly replaceable at the Safety position.

Next, I will be going through and posting what I believe will be the Patriots record. I will not be doing any score predictions as who knows what this team is going to look like come September.

Schedule:

Week 1 vs Miami (W)

Week 2 as Seattle (L)

Week 3 vs Las Vegas (W)

Week 4 at Kansas City (L)

Week 5 vs Denver (W)

Week 16 vs Buffalo (W)

Week 17 vs at Miami (L)

Record 7-9

Yep. I do not think this team will be making the playoffs this season. Buffalo is poised to take over the AFC East for the foreseeable future. They might be able to sneak into a wild card spot, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

So here is the real question to all the Patriot fans out there, are you happy with the Cam Newton experiment or would you rather they started Jarrett Stidham/Brian Hoyer and potentially tank for Trevor Lawrence?

Looking forward to talking to you all soon.
