Pittsburgh Steelers: Uncertainty in Steel City

By: John Ankeny

The 2020 NFL season is just seven days away. This season begins amidst a cloud of uncertainty mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is also a lot of uncertainty surrounding the 2020 Pittsburgh Steelers

After last year’s battle of the backup quarterbacks featuring Devlin Hodgins (“Duck”) and Mason Rudolph, the Steelers are looking forward to the return of veteran signal caller, Ben Roethlisberger.

Look, despite his age and recent elbow surgery, in his last full season -2018- Big Ben threw for 5,000 yards and was a league MVP candidate. I, for one, think that the combination of a renewed Ben and a young receiving corps headlined by JuJu Smith-Schuster will be a lethal combination.

There is a lot of uncertainty over whether JuJu can emerge as a legitimate No. 1 receiver. The addition of Chase Claypool, through the draft, and Diontae Johnson slated to take on a larger role, should allow JuJu to play his normal WR2 role again.

One thing is certain, this offense needs to figure it out quickly so as not to waste Big Ben’s twilight years.

Despite the offensive uncertainty in Pittsburgh, one thing remains a bedrock of consistency.
The defense. The 2020 Steelers’ defense will be a top-five, if not a top-three, unit. This year is going to be reminiscent of the 2005 Super Bowl run when Troy Polamalu ran that defense.

The 2020 Steelers will mainly rely on their defense, but having Big Ben back, and healthy, helps. Ben’s presence will give the defense some needed rest.

I, for one, cannot wait to see how it all plays out this year. With all the uncertainty surrounding this team, hopefully they figure it out and we can chant, “HERE WE GO STEELERS” in Tampa Bay this February.
